About AbleGauge
ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts for eligible people with disabilities. The rules around them — annual contribution limits, ABLE-to-Work, how an ABLE balance interacts with SSI resource limits, and each program's own maximum balance — live in separate places: the Social Security Administration, the ABLE National Resource Center, and each state's own ABLE program. AbleGauge exists to put those numbers in one place, each one explained with where it comes from.
What AbleGauge is
- An educational calculator that runs the real SSA resource-exclusion formula, not a simplified "balance over $100,000 = lose SSI" shortcut.
- A tracker you can return to as your balance and contributions change.
- An independent monitoring layer that sits on top of the ABLE account you already have — it does not replace your ABLE program.
What AbleGauge is not
- Not a bank, and not your ABLE program. We don't hold, move, or manage your money.
- Not a financial adviser, investment adviser, or legal adviser.
- Not a benefits counselor.
- Not an SSI eligibility determination service, and not affiliated with the Social Security Administration, the IRS, or any state ABLE program.
Every result you see is an estimate based only on the numbers you type in. AbleGauge cannot see your SSA case file, your ABLE program account, or your bank accounts. For a decision that affects your actual benefits, review current SSA guidance directly or talk with a qualified benefits counselor.
How we source numbers
Every calculation includes a "Why this number?" explanation with an official source and the date it was last checked. We prioritize primary sources in this order:
- SSI-related rules — Social Security Administration / SSA POMS.
- ABLE contribution and ABLE-to-Work figures — the ABLE National Resource Center.
- Program-specific balance maximums — each state ABLE program's own official site.
We do not cite IRS.gov for current ABLE figures. As of our last check, IRS.gov's own ABLE page had not been updated for the current tax year's contribution limit or the 2026 age-of-onset eligibility expansion — so we rely on the more current sources above instead.
Why "SSI Resource Exposure," not a $100,000 alarm
A common misconception is that an ABLE account balance crossing $100,000 automatically ends SSI. That's not how the rule works. The first $100,000 in an ABLE account is excluded from SSI countable resources — only the amount above $100,000 counts, and it's combined with your other countable resources and compared to the SSI resource limit. A $101,000 balance with no other resources is usually nowhere near a problem. AbleGauge is built around that real mechanic. Read the full explanation.
