Frequently Asked Questions
About AbleGauge
What is AbleGauge?
AbleGauge is a free calculator and, eventually, a monitoring app for ABLE account holders. It helps you see your annual contribution room, your optional ABLE-to-Work room, and your SSI resource exposure — all in one place, each explained with an official source.
Is AbleGauge affiliated with the Social Security Administration, the IRS, or my ABLE program?
No. AbleGauge is an independent tool. It is not a bank, not an ABLE program, and not a government service. See our full disclaimer.
Is the app available yet?
Not yet — AbleGauge is currently in a pre-launch validation phase. The free web calculator is live now; the app is not. Join early access to be notified when it is.
Will AbleGauge cost money?
The web calculator is free. The planned app is expected to offer a free tier (contribution tracking, a basic dashboard, and the full, correct SSI resource exposure calculator) plus an optional paid tier for proactive alerts, what-if scenarios, and history. Pricing is not final and nothing is for sale on this site today.
Does AbleGauge connect to my bank or ABLE program account?
No. AbleGauge uses manual entry only — there is no bank connection, no ABLE provider integration, and no login to any government system.
Using the calculator
Does the calculator store or send my numbers anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your entered balances are used only to compute your results on your device and are never transmitted anywhere. See our Privacy Policy.
Why do I have to enter "other countable resources," not just my ABLE balance?
Because SSI resource exposure isn't just about your ABLE balance. Only the amount your ABLE balance exceeds $100,000 counts as a resource — and that amount is combined with your other countable resources before comparing to the SSI resource limit. Leaving this out would understate your exposure and risk repeating the misleading "$100,000 cliff" idea we're specifically trying to correct. See Does an ABLE Account Affect SSI?
What does "SAFE" actually mean?
SAFE means: no threshold issue was detected from the information you entered. It does not mean the Social Security Administration has reviewed or guaranteed your case — it's only as accurate as what you typed in.
ABLE and SSI basics
What is an ABLE account?
An ABLE account is a tax-advantaged savings account for eligible people with disabilities, established under Section 529A of the Internal Revenue Code, that lets a beneficiary save without the balance immediately counting against the standard, much lower SSI resource limit — up to a threshold. See ABLE Account vs. the SSI $2,000 Resource Limit.
Does an ABLE account affect SSI?
It can, but not the way many people assume. The full explanation, with the exact SSA formula and a worked example, is on our pillar page: Does an ABLE Account Affect SSI?
How much can I contribute to an ABLE account in 2026?
The base annual limit is $20,000, plus an additional ABLE-to-Work amount for some working beneficiaries. See ABLE Account Contribution Limit 2026 and ABLE to Work.
Accessibility
Is this site accessible?
We build to WCAG 2.1 AA: keyboard navigation, visible focus states, labeled form fields, status shown with text and icons rather than color alone, and support for 200% browser zoom. If you find a barrier, we'd like to know — accessibility is a first-class requirement for AbleGauge, not an afterthought, given who this product is built for.
